Supporting juveniles in conflict with the law for a successful reintegration into society’



Undikumbukire Project Zambia (UP Zambia) is a specialist provider of legal and social services to juveniles in conflict with the law, providing legal assistance to hundreds of juveniles each year and visiting facilities across 4 provinces on a regular basis. Build It International is an NGO creating opportunities for young people and their communities through building skills training, work experience and essential community building projects. UP Zambia in partnership with Build It International is embarking on a newly funded, three-year EU project supporting juveniles in conflict with the law to successfully reintegrate into society through vocational skills training and holistic wellness programmes.



We are now seeking a Psychosocial Counsellor to implement a counselling programme for juveniles in conflict with the law.  The Psychosocial Counsellor will be responsible for providing quality counselling services to juveniles in the Lusaka Correctional Facilities, and to develop suitable care plans for juvenile clients.  This is a full time position.


Location: Lusaka


Key Areas of Responsibility:


1.    Psychosocial Counselling

·         Carry out individual assessments of juveniles in conflict with the law in Lusaka

·         Provide individual and group counselling to juveniles in Lusaka Correctional Facilities, utilising appropriate techniques and approaches

·         Implementation of an art therapy programme

·         Ensure that all juveniles in Lusaka Correctional Facilities have contact with counselling services

·         Training and coordination with correctional facility counselling staff

·         Case management

·         Work with Social Worker to develop effective care plans for each juvenile in detention and post release

·         Network with other organisations that provide specialised therapy programmes for juvenile clients


2.    Communications and Reporting

·        Develop a working relationship with other project staff members to ensure project targets are met

·        Ensure timely reporting and clear case records are kept throughout the project

·        Provide monthly reports to the Director of Social Work

Skills and Experience:


·        Minimum of 3 years of experience in psychosocial counselling

·        Experience in counselling for vulnerable populations is desirable

·        The ability to utilise a range of counselling techniques and approaches

·        A degree in a relevant field

·        Competent computer skills in MS Office

·        Excellent communication and reporting skills

·        The ability to self manage own workload and anticipate priorities

·        The ability to work in, and adapt to, challenging environments

·        Experience in developing and implementing care plans

·        An approachable style of working with others to achieve successful outcomes

·        Fluent in English and Nyanja, additional local languages are an added advantage

·        Preparedness to work outside normal working hours when required

·        Valid driver’s license preferred
